Experience

Dr. Elizabeth “Liz” Mahaney is a licensed psychotherapist, marriage and family therapist, and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator with more than 20 years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families. She is the Owner and Clinical Director of South Tampa Therapy & Mediation, a boutique private practice specializing in relationship therapy, individual psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, and complex family dynamics. Dr. Mahaney has extensive experience helping couples navigate communication difficulties, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, infidelity and betrayal trauma, intimacy concerns, attachment injuries, separation and divorce, blended-family dynamics, and high-conflict relationships. Her individual work includes anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, OCD, ADHD, perfectionism, burnout, relationship patterns, major life transitions, and personal growth. Her clinical approach is integrative, systemic, attachment-focused, and highly individualized. She incorporates the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Nonviolent/Compassionate Communication (NVC), psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, trauma-informed approaches, and practical solution-focused interventions. Her work emphasizes developing self-awareness, understanding underlying emotional and relational patterns, improving communication, strengthening emotional regulation, and translating insight into meaningful behavioral change. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Mahaney is a Florida Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy interns and provides professional consultation, clinical supervision, and mentorship to developing clinicians. Her background in mediation and family systems also provides a unique perspective when working with complex relational, co-parenting, separation, and family-law concerns. At the center of Dr. Mahaney’s work is the belief that self-awareness creates choice. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, she collaborates with clients to understand what is happening beneath the surface, identify patterns that are no longer serving them, and create practical agreements and strategies that support healthier relationships, greater emotional well-being, and more intentional living.
