Why Known Practice

You deserve to know what stands behind a specialty.

A specialty label alone doesn’t show a clinician’s focused training, experience, or certification. Known Practice makes the evidence behind each specialty visible, so clients and referring clinicians can make more informed choices.

For clinicians

Be known for what you know.

The expertise you worked years to build deserves to be represented accurately, recognized clearly, and found by the people looking for it.

For clients and families

Know who you’re choosing.

See what stands behind a specialty and the practical details that can help you take the next step with more confidence.

A specialty should mean something

A checkbox can’t tell you what stands behind it.

You wouldn’t choose a painter to repair your roof based only on a box they checked saying they were interested in roofing. You would want to know whether they had the training and experience to do the work.

In mental health care, a specialty label alone can’t tell you whether a clinician has focused training, meaningful experience, or a relevant certification. When a profile can list many specialties without showing what supports them, it can be difficult to distinguish a true area of expertise from a general interest.

Known Practice makes the evidence behind specialty claims visible. Credible expertise deserves more than a checkbox—and people deserve to understand who they are choosing.

A clearer standard

A certification, focused training, and a provider-reported area of focus are different kinds of evidence. We make those distinctions visible.

See how verification works

A credible difference

See what stands behind the profile.

Known Practice is built as a credible directory for verified credentials and evidence-labeled expertise. Search placement is not for sale, and clients can contact or book with the clinician they choose through the platform. The difference should be visible before you ever begin care.

Typical directories

  • Dozens of self-selected specialty checkboxes
  • A license check with little context behind specialty claims
  • No visible distinction between interest, experience, training, and certification
  • An “accepting clients” label that may no longer be current
  • Payment information that can remain unclear until you call
  • Paid promotion can influence which profiles receive greater visibility
  • A listing may route you through a platform instead of directly to your chosen clinician

Known Practice

  • Up to five primary specialties, each with a visible evidence designation
  • Licensure verified separately against the issuing authority
  • Certification, formal training, focused experience, and provider-reported focus clearly distinguished
  • Recurring availability reconfirmed at least every seven days
  • Insurance, private pay, or both stated clearly on the profile
  • No paid placement: membership does not buy a higher position in search
  • Contact the clinician you chose, request a consultation, or book an available appointment online when direct booking is offered

Less calling around. More clarity.

The details that shape a real referral belong in one place.

A profile may say “accepting new clients,” but that does not help if the opening is gone. A search result may suggest a provider takes your insurance, only for you to find out after calling that your plan is not accepted. Known Practice is designed to make those practical details clearer before you reach out.

Expertise with evidence behind it

We show the evidence designation for each specialty, so issuer-verified certification, documented training, and a provider-reported focus are not presented as if they were the same thing.

Availability with a recent confirmation

Clinicians are asked to confirm availability at least every seven days. Profiles show when availability was last confirmed, so you can judge how current the information is.

Clearer payment information

Profiles state whether a clinician reports taking insurance, private pay, or both. Insurance participation and benefits can vary by plan, so confirm the details with the clinician and your insurer.

Availability and payment information are provider-reported. Confirm current openings, insurance participation, and benefits directly with the clinician and your plan before beginning care.

Founded by a psychologist

Built by someone who knows this work

A psychologist’s perspective, built into the platform.

I’m Dr. Elyssa Barbash, a psychologist. I started Known Practice because I know how important it is to find someone with the right experience—and how difficult it can be to see that clearly.

This field is full of clinicians who have worked hard to build deep expertise. Their training and experience matter. Clients deserve to understand who they are choosing, and clinicians deserve a clearer way to recognize and refer to one another’s strengths.

Known Practice is my effort to make that possible: a credible, reliable place to find verified credentials, understand specialty expertise, and begin mental health care with less guesswork.

Known Practice begins with mental health. The idea reaches further.

We chose a name broad enough to hold that future. Today, we are building the most credible and useful version of that idea for mental health care.
